Guest lesson plans today from twenty-year veteran teacher of multiple high school English levels, middle school, former journalism adviser, current debate coach extraordinaire and Hillsborough County Schools Teacher-of-the-Year finalist, Montine Vona-Pergola. She brings us analysis, lessons, paired texts (and songs!), and writing prompts inspired by Evan Watson's A Rose Stem in Winter (the second of Evan's poems that we've published!).

Reinventing at the Crossroads

"Why not try and make yourself?" - Incubus

I see this poem as a metaphor for reinventing oneself. Or rather, a person standing at a crossroads in their life and deciding whether to reinvent themselves and—if so—how to do it. This is a moment faced by people at all ages of life when faced with the choice of remaining in place or moving forward. I thought it was a very original idea to represent this as a rose in winter. Overall, the first thing that stood out to me when I read it was the author’s use of imagery. Every line painted a vivid picture using description and figurative language. In the end, this poem stands out among others for its creative theme and vivid images.
